The Rab Veil 1L is a lightweight belt pack designed for trail running, hiking and general outdoor sports adventures. The breathable fabric, secure and comfortable design, and neat storage features make this a versatile and indispensable companion for your everyday adventures.

Made from strong yet highly breathable Ripstop Mono Mesh, this ultralight minimalist mountain running belt pack is perfect for carrying your necessities on your fast-paced adventures. 

The Ripstop Mono Mesh provides a strong yet breathable framework, which is 50% lighter and retains 70% less water than spacer mesh normally used in backpacks and hip-packs. Weight has further been kept to an absolute minimum, and breathability maximised; with details such as mesh pockets, laser-cut holes on the waist belt, and a low profile design.

Storage comes in the form of one main zipped lumbar pocket (1 litre), with an internal zipped security pocket; this set-up is perfect for snacks, gels, a phone and house keys. Then, there are three mesh stash pockets and four small webbing loops for quick-to-access essentials and personalised storage.

The lightweight mesh design and a fluorocarbon-free DWR treatment means water and sweat absorption are kept to a minimum. 

This is easily the most comfortable running belt pack that I have used to date. The large back panel sits securely in the lumbar area of your back, yet it doesn't feel bulky or overly hot in the summer sunshine. Storage options are also plentiful, and even small details have been considered such as the internal zipped pocket and webbing loops for attaching lanyards and an emergency whistle.

The fit is super secure and highly adjustable, thanks to the quality hook-and-loop belt strip; I much prefer this design to a webbing strap and buckle that can dig in and work loose over time. Any excess belt can be tucked inside the mesh; keeping it out of the way and stopping it brushing against your arms as you run. 

Stable, secure, breathable, and reliable. The Rab Veil 1 Litre is a winner in the small running pack category; it has certainly been my choice for many long runs and mountain adventures this summer.

Kit Focus – Merrell MQM 3 Mid Gore-Tex Hiking Boots

Fresh from the mountains of Sri Lanka, this is my review of the versatile and sure-footed Merrell MQM 3 Mid GORE-TEX hiking boots.  Merrell shoes have been a trustworthy walking partner of mine for several years now; with previous models reviewed here on The Expedition Journals including the MQM Flex 2.0 and ChopRock Aqua Shoes . The brand's footwear is comfortable, durable, and provides a reassuring foothold on a multitude of terrains. 2021 started with a lot more hiking than normal. A fall on ice on Christmas Day morning enforced a need to take four weeks off from cycling, kayaking, or sailing—due to a broken elbow.
